There are many books that are given the title of "Roberts Rules" in some form or
another. Often, they are a treatment of, or a discussion by an author about the
parliamentary authority known generically as "Robert's Rules". Many are reprints
of older, outdated, and obsolete editions
But in any organization where the parliamentary authority established in the bylaws
is the current edition of "Robert's Rules of Order. . ." the book
that is prescribed is the one shown here.
According to the Robert's Rules Association:
"Robert's Rules of Order is America's foremost guide to parliamentary
procedure. It is used by more professional associations, fraternal organizations, and
local governments than any other authority. The latest edition of the book, published in
2000, is adopted by the National Association of Parliamentarians as its preferred
parliamentary authority, and endorsed by the American Institute of Parliamentarians as
well.
The 2000 edition, referred to as Robert's
Rules of Order Newly Revised (RONR), supersedes all earlier editions as the
parliamentary authority in organizations that have adopted Robert's Rules of Order
in their bylaws. It is important for all members of an organization to use a single
parliamentary guide. Older editions of Robert's Rules have significant
differences in their guidelines and page and section references, which can exacerbate
disagreements instead of helping to settle them."
